Toronto (February 4, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) condemns the antisemitic graffiti discovered last week at a Winnipeg restaurant owned by a Jewish family.

The word “Jew” was spray-painted on the windows and parking lot of BerMax Caffe and Bistro. FSWC has confirmed with Winnipeg Police Service that the incident is being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit.

“This is a painful reminder that even 74 years after the end of the Second World War,during which 6 million Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust, we continue to see Jewish families and businesses targeted by antisemitism,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Locals are being urged to remain vigilant, as this appears to be a repeat offender who is specifically targeting a Jewish business.” 

According to news reports, this is the second time the restaurant has been the target of antisemitic graffiti and the fourth time it has been vandalized.
